Tourists visiting Rome next year will have to pay a city tax even if they have already booked and paid for a trip, Rome City Council has confirmed. From 1 January 2011, travelers will have to pay €2 per person per night for holidays lasting up to 10 days and those staying in four or five-star hotels will pay €3 per night. The fee has been brought in to help improve and maintain the city’s tourist attractions. Charges will not apply to children under two years of age.
